New to Yoga

Ready to explore yoga? Here are some basics to know before you begin.

One of the most important parts of yoga is listening to and honoring your own body. No matter how skilled the instructor, your body is your best guide—letting you know when to ease up, go deeper, or pause. Trust that wisdom, even if it differs from what others are doing.

KEEP IN MIND
Be kind to yourself—trying something new can feel uncomfortable at first. Yoga isn’t a competition; just showing up is a win. Listen to your body, honor your limits, and know that strength comes from awareness, not pushing. You’ll feel better for it—both today and in future classes.

WHERE TO START
It’s completely normal to feel a little unsure when starting yoga. Many people worry they won’t be “good enough” or flexible enough—but the beauty of yoga is that there’s no such thing as perfect. Yoga meets you exactly as you are, in this moment. If you’re wondering where or how to begin, read on…

CLASS SIZE
Our classes typically range from 5-15 students, though sizes can vary greatly depending on the class, season, holiday or even weather. Our max is usually 24 students.

HOW OFTEN TO TAKE CLASSES
How often you practice is a personal choice. Some students come four or more times a week, while others find that once a week or even bi-weekly works best. What matters most is consistency—regular practice brings the greatest benefits and growth. And often, the more yoga you do, the more you’ll want to do…it simply feels that good. Trust your body; it will guide you to what’s right for you.

OM IN CLASS
Some teachers begin or end class with a shared “OM”—the simplest Sanskrit mantra, said to reflect the sound of the universe. Chanting it together is a way to feel connection and unity. You’re always welcome to join in or simply listen—do whatever feels right for you.

FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE
If the class feels too intense or you need a break, we encourage you to rest in child’s pose (shown below) for as long as you need before rejoining. If you’d like, feel free to call the teacher over to share how you’re feeling—they’re here to support you. And remember, if you need to leave early, that’s okay too—we’ll happily credit your account.
