frequently asked questions

What should I most keep in mind when doing yoga?

Listen to and respect your body - listen to and respect your body - listen to and respect your body!  No matter how skilled our instructors, the most important guide in your yoga practice will always be you.  Your body will tell you when to slow down, speed up, back off, or go deeper.  Please respect that guidance even if it may go against what the instructor or fellow students are saying or doing.

studio etiquette

What is basic studio etiquette at Namaskar Yoga?

-   Please remove your shoes when in the studio.

-   Please sign in before class.  If there is no one servicing the front desk and you need help, please ask your instructor for assistance.

-    If you have any current or past health issues please advise your instructor prior to class.

-    Listen to your body.

Is the studio always open?

Typically, the studio opens 15 mins before the beginning of each scheduled class.

When should I arrive for class?

If this is your first time at the studio, it is recommended that you arrive at least 10 mins prior to class, so you can check in and get oriented to the studio.  Even if this is your 100th time at Namaskar Yoga, though, it’s always nice to get in a few minutes early, set up, socialize with fellow students, or just relax a bit.

What if I arrive late to class?

You are welcome to enter class if you are late.  Setting yourself up quickly and quietly will be very appreciated.

What if I have to leave early?

No problem.  Just let your teacher know ahead of time. Prior to leaving, take at least five minutes to rest on your back in the final resting pose (savasana) and please leave as inconspicuously as possible.

Can I leave my mat at the studio?

Absolutely. There is storage space in the front foyer.

Can I bring my things into the studio space with me?

Coats and shoes can be left in the foyer.  We ask that valuables be brought into the studio space with you.

Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept Master Card and Visa as well as personal checks and good, old-fashioned cash.

pre-class preparation

Do I need to pre-register for class?

Nope.  Our classes are offered on a walk-in basis.  Workshops and the occasional specially class series programs that we offer do normally require preregistration.

Can I eat before coming to class?

A good rule of thumb is to refrain from eating at least two hours prior to class.  It’s generally recommended that you practice yoga on an empty stomach.  Your body will thank you for it.

Which classes are appropriate for me?

The majority of our classes are open to all levels of students. By offering variations to poses throughout, teachers create classes that challenge and satisfy new and experienced students alike.  We offer 6 wk Intro to Yoga classes for beginners who are interested in building a basic foundation before starting to take classes from the regular schedule. One notation is that "Vinyasa +" classes are directed specifically to students with a more established practice.   Feel free to call with any questions: 773.472.0930.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing.  However, nothing too baggy for a couple reasons.  First, trying to keep your t-shirt from falling over your face in some positions can get irritating.  And, second (and even more important), your teacher needs to be able to see your body alignment during poses to ensure safety.  Bare feet are best.

What should I bring?

Community mats, as well as blocks, straps, blankets and bolsters, are all available for your use.  However, if you have your own mat, it is recommended you bring it with you.  A towel may be a good idea if you sweat a lot - or intend to…  We have water but if you feel the need to drink during class, your own water bottle might be useful.

health

If I have a current/past injury or condition, can I practice yoga?

Most likely. However, to be on the safe side you should consult with your physician prior to initiating classes. Please make certain to inform your instructor of your condition prior to class.  This way he/she can guide your practice in the safest and most beneficial manner.

Can I practice yoga when I’m menstruating?

Absolutely.  However we do suggest that you avoid inverted postures.  Please ask your instructor to suggest alternative poses.  And as always please listen to your body – don’t hesitate to take breaks and use less effort if need be.

Can I practice yoga while pregnant?

Please consult with your physician prior to initiating yoga classes.  If you receive a green light please inform your instructor of your condition prior to the start of class. This way he/she can guide your practice in the safest and most beneficial manner.

parking

Is street parking difficult?

Generally, no.  There are metered spots in front of the studio on Southport Ave. and plenty of free parking in the neighborhood.

How do Cubs games affect the parking situation?

Night Cubs games can make parking a bit more challenging. If you have the time, we recommend leaving your car behind on these nights. There are no parking restrictions on day games, only more traffic to plan around.
